Loire

The Loire Valley (Val de Loire) is France’s third most important winemaking region. It is an exceptional cultural landscape that bears witness to the harmonious interaction between man and his environment throughout two thousand years of history. It is a land of balance between North and South, vivacity, smooth and crisp freshness, elegance, art and literature, tradition and modernity.

The area has a continental climate that is influenced heavily by the Loire River and the Atlantic ocean at the western edge of the region. The climate can be very cool with spring time frost.

The diversity of soil (rock, bass, sand, gravel and alterite), multitude of climates and rich terrains, help the growers to produce a vibrant, diversity of wines and adopt multiple wine traditions.

It is a region that showcases par excellence a variety of terroirs. The differences in the terroirs are therefore fully expressed in the wide variety of wines produced, despite the fact that they use the same grape varieties.

The Loire Valley has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 1st century. In the High Middle Ages, the wines of the Loire Valley were the most esteemed wines in England and France, even more prized than those from Bordeaux.

The area includes 87 appellations under the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), Vin Délimité de Qualité Superieure (VDQS) and Vin de pays systems.

All wines from this region share a life marked by freshness, vivacity and elegant personality. Among the grapes from which the wines of the Loire Valley, the most commonly grown are the Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Loire Valley wines tend to exhibit a characteristic fruitiness with fresh, crisp flavours.
