Lodovico discovered the property which would become Tenuta di Biserno back in 1995, whilst researching land suitable for extending Ornellaia. What he saw excited him but he recognised that the geology and geography were markedly different from those of Ornellaia, much hillier and stonier. This would have to be a separate project. In the event, freed from Ornellaia and with an historic change in their relationship, Lodovico entered into a technical relationship with his brother Marchese Piero Antinori and landowner Umberto Mannoni. Together, they decided to breathe life into the potentially fabulous Biserno Estate.
Tenuta di Biserno was planted between 2001 and 2005 and has exceeded all expectations. This is a project which will make its mark in history.
Tenuta di Biserno is a 49 hectares estate, situated in Alta Maremma, coastal, western Tuscany, nestling amongst the hills of Bibbona. It borders the historic village of Bolgheri and enjoys beautiful views towards the Tyrrhenian Sea – a special place indeed.
Just on the border we find the vineyard Bellaria (beautiful air) the northern exposure of which is within Biserno with the southern exposure within Bolgheri. It is this extraordinary site which houses the celebrated vineyard of Lodovico itself, 6 hectares of spectacular terroir, within Biserno, widely regarded as the best in the area.
Biserno is our eponymous wine. Thought-provoking, Biserno reflects the excellent terroir and microclimate of the coastal area of the Upper Maremma. Classically produced, it warrants patience – possibly 5 to 6 years – to achieve optimal drinking. Biserno manages to maintain a sense of place, a coastal, Tuscan character yet with international flair, an individual personality apart from other wines of Alta Maremma. Only the finest grapes are selected, resulting in a wine of depth, intensity, complexity, longevity and elegance – all thanks to the terroir and microclimate. The blend here is Cabernet Franc with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
